Oogenesis Flashcards
When does oogenesis begin?
Prenatally in the fetus. At birth, 1 oocytes are already present in the ovaries.
Females begin with a fixed number of 1 oocytes that undergo meiosis. Then they form a follicle. What phase do they arrest in until puberty?
Prophase I
How do the 1 oocytes come out of prophase I? What happens after?
Signals mediated by FSH during puberty. Continues through meiosis but arrests again in metaphase II
When the gonadotropins FSH and LH are released from the anterior pituitary lobe, what happens?
Ovulation
What happens during ovulation?
2 oocyte which was arrested in metaphase II is released from the follicle
How does the 2 oocyte make it to the uterus?
Travel through the fallopian tube
What happens if the 2 oocyte is fertilized?
Meiosis II is completed and a zygote is formed by the union of the spermatozoa and a mature ovum.
What happens if the 2 oocyte is not fertilized?
The 2 oocyte disintegrates and is shed with the endometrial lining from the uterus during menstruation
