Ontological Argument Flashcards
What’s the ontological argument
Proving god without reference to sense experience
St anselm and Descartes developed versions
A priori argument
The very definition of god entails his existence
Where’s his argument found
In anselms brief work proslogion
Contradiction in argument
What the whole argument relies on
Refers to the fool in psalms who says in his heart there is no god so you can understand and acknowledge things e.g. Mermaid but not believe they exist
Says the fool is contradicting himself
If god is the greatest thing we can think of and he doesn’t exist then he’s not the greatest thing we can think of
EVERYTHING WE THINK OF FAKLS IN TO FOUR CATEGORIES
1 possible to be 2 possible not to be 3 not possible to be 4,not possible not to be Fourth category are things that have to be
Gaunilios criticism
Argued anselms argument was wishful thinking in that it permitted anything to be thought into existence
Asked us to consider mythical lost island, if the perfect island didn’t exist it would be a contradiction to call it the perfect island for the perfect island would not be perfect if it did not exist
By definition for something to be perfect it must exist
