What do catholic’s believe
About the statement
The entire universe was made by god
Humans were made in gods image and likeness
(Humans are superior to the rest of creation, as we have reason and free will)
We were given the role to care for creation
Stewardship
God commands humans to have authority over nature and a responsibility to take care of it. We need to do this to protect the environment for future generations.
What is the source of authority for catholic’s
“God said ‘ rule over the fish in the sea and birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground” bible, genesis 1
My judgement on the catholic’s point of view
It’s a weak point
I am a humanist
I do not believe that god created the world ( I believe the Big Bang did)
I also don’t believe that god stated that we were responsible for his creation
What do humanists believe about the statement
We should care for creation but not because god told us to
We should be steward of the earth out of concern for other humans and animals
Humans can act to give their life meaning by seeking happiness and helping others to be happy too
We should value animal life to the same extent as humans as they help us to survive e.g bees pollinating plants for crops/food
What is the source of authority for humanists
Peter singer
Believes speciesism is wrong and we should value animal life to the same extent as human life, so we should care for the environment more, to care for animals.
My view
I am a humanist so I believe that we should care for the earth for future generations. I believe that we should care for it out of concern for other and animals rather than because someone had commanded us to do so. It is also a nice thing to do as there are more generations to come after us and we can’t just leave it to be a mess for them.
