A

The health and welfare of the farmed animals is closely linked to the welfare of the producers. Poor animal welfare leads to reduced productivity.

A

Some of societys goals linked to animal welfare

  1. No poverty- an improved welfare of animals may be able to provide a path out of poverty
  2. Good health and wellbeing- good welfare= increased immunocompetence and resistance to zoonotic disease
  3. Decent work and economic growth- Appropriate animal handler results in a less stressed animal which results in a better and safer work environment for humans

Poor welfare and stress response

A

Poor welfare leads to increase in stress (increase in gut permeability, alteration in expression of neutrophil genes, and challenges of immune system). A lower immune response leads to disease.
