What is leukemia?
Malignant disorder of blood and blood-forming organs, including bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen
Describe Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
- Most common
- Differentiation abnormalities in the lymphoid cell lineage
- Peak onset: 2-5 years
Describe Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML).
- Differentiation abnormalities in the myeloid cell lineage
- Peak onset: 1st year of life
How is Leukemia diagnosed?
- Bone marrow aspirate
- Lumbar puncture
Leukemia treatment?
- Chemotherapy
- Stem cell transplant
What is Lymphoma?
Originates from lymphatic system, including the spleen and all lymph nodes (Involves B and T lymphocytes)
Describe Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
- Common in less than 10 years old
- Diagnosis
- Biopsy
- Symptoms
- Fever, weight loss, night sweats
- Treatment
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation not routine
Describe Hodgkin Lymphoma.
- Common in 15-19 years old
- Diagnosis
- Biopsy: Reed-Sternberg Cells
- Symptoms
- Painless, enlarged lymph node
- Non-specific symptoms
- Treatment
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
Wilm’s tumor location?
kidneys
Wilm’s tumor clinical manifestations?
- Asymptomatic abdominal mass
- Malaise, hematuria, and hypertension
Wilm’s tumor precautions?
Avoid palpating the abdomen. Wilm’s tumor is often encapsulated and palpating the abdomen could cause the tumor to rupture and spread cancer cells.
