1939 became compulsory – certainly caused loss of
enthusiasm amongst youth
What was the OND?
OND – national network of subsidised Fascist leisure
clubs for workers.
When was it established?
Est. 1925 & under PNF control from 1927.
What is the OND involve?
Sport, music, films, plays, dancing, organised
holidays, welfare for poor families. Cinema, theatre
companies, sports clubs, orchestras, libraries.
How many people joined it?
Became most active and largest adult organisation –
4 million members in 1939.
Why did the OND lead to the acceptance to fascism?
Emphasis on leisure activities rather than
indoctrination led to general acceptance of fascism.
What was the problem with the OND?
manual and non-manual workers tended not to
mix.
Failed to instil fascism’s militaristic values nor foster a
real sense of national community.
