On Social Exclusion and Education Flashcards
Definition of “dark anthropology”
an anthropological approach to structural violence (power, domination, inequality, and oppression), as well as on social suffering (the subjective experience of structural violence in the form of depression and hopelessness)
Primo’s story
Primo’s mother was illiterate and came from a rural area –> he couldn’t do well in school because that would be like betraying his mother –> he used his literacy to lie to his mother (who retaliated with beatings, anger, and distrust) & he embraced street culture, which let him lash back at the school’s symbolic violence –> now Primo is respected on the streets for managing a crack house firmly but flexibly
Caesar’s story
Caesar’s mother was more literate and acculturated, but there was a lot more violence in his family –> he was abused as a child by his mother and grandmother –> Caesar also changed schools multiple times, which meant he had to develop a violent persona to survive –> now he is feared and mistrusted on the streets due to his repeated bursts of violence and cruelty
