Definition of “sex”
usually based on the assignment of a binary category (male/female) based on chromosomes, external/internal anatomy, and other factors arbitrarily determined by physicians
Definition of “gender”
social and cultural construction that fits biological differences into socially meaningful categories
identity with and lived-experience of how one feels on the sometimes sliding spectrum of female-male experience, but also applies to those who don’t fit on the female-male spectrum
Cis-gender
correspondence between one’s gender based on their biological sex and the gender they identity with and/or experience
Transgender
those whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on their biological sex
Gender-queer/intersex
lived-experience and identification with both male and female, neither, or a combination
e.g. hijras, agender, demi-girl/boy/ambigender
Definition of “gender ideology”
the totality of ideas about sexualities, genders, and the “natures” of women, men, and those who live outside and in between the sex spectrum (female-male)
these “natures” include their sexualities, and the varying interpretations, meanings, and relations thereof
Gender roles
culturally interpreted and patterned, and therefore subject to variation
can be based on a narrow, morally-grounded understanding of what is “normal” or “normative”, which is itself based on gender ideology
Toxic masculinity
an example of how gender roles in a traditional gendered binary can be noxious
a cultural expectation for men to be more dominant, and that the range of their emotional expression should be limited to that of anger
