OMFS- Bone Grafts Flashcards
What are some causes for bone loss?
Congenital
Traumatic
Pathology
Natural
What is an autogenous bone graft?
A bone graft from one site to another within the same individual
Eg Intra oral (chin, ramus) or extra oral (hip and calvarium)
What is a xenograft?
A type of bone graft taken from another species
Eg deproteinised bone matrix (Bio-Os from bovine)
What is an allograft?
A bone graft from a donor of the same species (from cadavers)
Eg irradiated sterilised freeze dried bone blocks
What is an alloplastic graft?
A bone graft made from natural sources and synthetic materials
Eg Hydroxyapetite
What is bone bioengineering?
Growth factors - eg BMPs (Bone morphogenic proteins)
What is osteoconduction?
The concept of scaffold that supports the bone forming cells
What is the benefit of using a xenograft?
Reduced rate of resorption
High mineral content
What is the purpose of sinus pneumotisation?
If cannot place implant due to reduced height until sinus
Reposition sinus lining and place bone graft underneath
What is alveolar distraction osteogenesis?
Osteotomy where a distraction device is placed to encourage bone deposition
Separate bone from each other by 1mm a day (0.5 in morning and 0.5mm at night)
