What is delerium?
A state of mental confusion that starts suddenly and is caused by a physical condition of some sort
What is hypoactive delerium?
Most common type, associated more with dementia presentations such as being withdrawn making it harder to spot
What is hyperactive delerium?
Less common and easier to spot, there is increased activity, restlessness, agitation, and sometimes hallucinations or delusions.
What does PINCHME stand for with delerium?
Pain
Nutrition
Constipation
Hydration
Medication
Environment
What actions are associated with hypoactive delerium?
- Sluggish and drowsy
- less reactive and sullen
- looks withdrawn
- Reduced LOC
- Reduced concentration
- Awareness of time and location impaired
What is the onset of delerium?
Abrupt and sudden
Define Dementia:
Umberella term to describe a group of symptoms consisting of a wide variety of diseases and disorders of the brain
What does dementia reuslt in?
Deteriorating intellectual functioning icluding a decline in cognitive performance and memory
What is the frontal lobe in charge of?
Controls things like personality, behaviour, speaking and writing
What does the broccas area control?
Speaking and writing is structured and organised
What does the parietal lobe control?
Interprets language, and words, senses like touch and pain
What does the occpitial lobe control?
Vision, colour light
Where is the wernicks area?
in the temporal lobe
What does the temporal lobe control?
Understanding, language and ,memory
What does the cerbellum control?
Regulating the skeletal system muscle movement such as walking
Initially what part of the brain does alzheimers affect?
The temporal lobe and the hippocampus meaning memory loss at the earky stage can happen
What causes alzheimers?
Caused by a buildup of proteins in the brain. Protein synapses and take up beta amlyoid releasing cytokines that are non healthy neurons that affect the healthy neurons
What are some early stage symptoms with alzheimers?
Forgetting recent events or conversations
Misplacing items
forgetting appoitments
struggling to find the right words
repeating themselves
mood changes
What are some middle stage symptoms for alzheimers?
Increasing confusion and disorerination
Delusions
Hallucinations
Obsessive or repititive behaviours
disturbed sleep
What are some late stage symptoms for alzheimers?
Aggressive behaviour
incontinence
difficulty eating and swallowing
loss of speach
mobility problems
weight loss
weak and frail
What causes vascular dementia?
Ciculatory compromise such as a stroke or TIA. Dead tissue can liquidise resulting in a loss of memory function
What can lewy body dementia be misdiagnoised with?
Alzheimers in the early stages
What will the dementia with lewy body symptoms be?
Will be around thinking, visual perception, sleep difficulties and hallucinations
