Ogata Banks Flashcards
what is F?
the mass of contaminant attached to a rock, quantified as the mass of contaminant sorbed to solids per unit mass of rock, F.
what is the linear equilibrium isotherm equation?
F = Kd.c
F = mass of contaminant per unit mass of rock [-]
Kd = partition/distribution coefficient [L3/M]
c = concentration in aqueous solution [M/L3]
what is partitioning?
The process of a contaminant originally in solution becoming distributed between there solution and the solid phase is called partitioning.Mathematically, it is described by a relationship called an isotherm (temperature dependent)
What is the equilibrium sorption isotherm?
If the sorptive process is rapid compared to the flow velocity, the solute will reach an equilibrium condition with the sorbed phase
What is the non-equilibrium sorption isotherm?
If the sorptive process is slow compared with the flow velocity, it may not reach equilibrium between the solute and the sorbed phase.
what is the limitation of the linear isotherm model?
There is no limit for sorption, but the rock only has a finite number of sorption sites. Thus the linear equilibrium model should be limited to low aqueous concentrations.
What is retardation?
Retardation is the effect of sorption that slows down contaminant movement
