Lab and Field Methods and Tests Flashcards
What is a auger hole?
A borehole which has no solid Casing below the water level.
What are the advantages of auger hole and piezometers tests?
cheap
quick
yield information relating to small scales
What are the disadvantages of auger hole and piezometer tests?
less control than a lab
less good theoretical basis than pumping tests
measurers properties mainly of the borehole damaged zone
yields information relating to small scales
What are the assumptions of the theory of auger tests?
Darcy’s Law is valid
There is no drawdown around the borehole
homogeneous system
the shape factor approach is valid ( S is not dependent on K)
What is the shape factor?
The shape factor accounts for geometrical factors. It is the cross sectional area through which the flow is going divided by the distance over which the head is dissipated
What is a packer test?
Packer tests are pumping tests performed on isolated sections of boreholes to determine the vertical hydraulic conductivity. Works best on un-screened boreholes.
What is a slug test?
A displacement test carried out in a full-scale borehole to obtain K (or T)
