Q

Copper IUD facts

A

No contraception backup is needed after copper IUD insertion regardless of timing of insertion in relation to menstrual cycle.

Immediate insertion after an induced or spontaneous abortion is acceptable, except after septic abortion.

IUD placement is avoided in active pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or the first 3 months after that.

The CDC recommends a sexually transmitted infections (STI) screen at time of insertion. Do not wait for results before insertion. If screening comes back positive, treat while IUD is in place.

Copper IUD is the MOST effective method of emergency contraception when placed within 5 days from unprotected intercourse.
