Offender profiling : Bottom up approach Flashcards
What is the bottom up approach ?
Generate a picture of the offender - their likely characteristics, routine and social background.
What is investigative psychology?
Matches details from crime scenes with statistical analysis of typical offender behaviour patterns based on psychological theory.
interpersonal coherence = that the way an offender behaves at the scene, including how they interact with the victim may reflect their behaviour in everyday situations.
The importance of time and place is also a key variable
Forensic awareness is individuals who have been the involved in police interrogation before, their behaviour may show how mindful they are “covering their tracks”
Geographic profiling = uses information to do with location of linked crime scene to make inferences about home of the offender or operational base of offender - known as crime mapping.
Canter circle theory proposed two models of offender behaviour
1.the marauder= who operates close proximity to their home
- The commuter= who are likely to travel distance away from their usual residence
