Tobacco & Alcohol •Diet •Achalasia •Head & Neck cancer •Tylosis, Coeliac disease & Lye ingestion

A
Oesophageal cancer belt” •Poor nutrition •Low intake fruit and vegetables •Drinking hot beverages •No sex bias in endemic variety

Where does the oesophagus run?
A
25cm long from cricoid cartilage to O-G Junction
two parts cervical and thoracic

What two layers of muscle make up the oesophagus?
A
Outer-longitudinal muscle
Inner-circular muscle

Where does the sub mucosal nodes drain to?
A
internal jugular, peri-tracheal, sub-carinal, peri-oesphageal, peri-aortic, peri-cardial, lesser curve of stomach

A
(L) gastric and coeliac nodes
•Watershed area is mid-thoracic oesophagus (below this drainage is caudal)
