Type II (neck fx); d/t watershed zone btw vertebral a. and internal carotid a. Type I is avulsion of tip Type III is a fx at the base of odontoid
How are odontoid fx treated?
Type I (hard collar for 6-12 weeks)
Type II elderly (hard collar 6-12 weeks)
Type II young (halo or hard collar)
Type III (hard collar)
Type II/III that go on to non-union or are at risk for non-union can be tx with posterior C1-C2 fusion
What are the risk factors for odontoid fracture non-union?
1) >5mm displacement
2) >50yo
3) > 10° angulation
4) comminution
5) delay in treatment
