Odontogenic tumours Flashcards
Which odontogenic pathology is associated with daughter cysts?
keratocyst. - it is fluid filled also.
What is an eruption cyst?
also known as eruption haematoma - bluish swelling that occurs on the soft tissue of an erupting teeth.
usually found in children
considered a superficial dentigerous cyst.
derived from reduced enamel epithelium.
What syndrome is associated with craniosynostosis?
Crouzon syndrome
autosomal dominant
premature cranial suture fusion
one of the features is that it can lead to cleft palate.
What happens if a lesion is below or above the mandibular canal?
above = odontogenic.
below = non-odontogenic.
What syndome compromises dysphagia and pain on mastication with elongated styloid process?
Eagle syndrome - elongated styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament
characteristic pain on turning head
What is unilocular lesion beneath id canal and towards angle of mandible?
Stafne’s bone cavity.
What are some clinical presentations of dentigerous cysts?
also known as follicular cysts
asymptomatic swelling/incidental finding.
benign.
Do OKC’s have root resorption?
Not necessarily may have minimal to no root resorption.
What symptoms may a patient have with a radicular cyst?
pain on biting.
What is squamous cell carcinoma?
malignant lesion typically presenting with moth eaten bone destruction with poorly defined margins.
What is Gardners syndrome typically characterised by?
multiple osteomas, epithelial cysts and intestinal polyps.
What is a pus filled cavity?
an abscess
different from a cyst (filled with fluid, gas or another semi-solid material)
What syndrome is associated with koilonycha (spoon nails)?
Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS).
What is Frey syndrome?
causes sweating whilst eating and facial flushing
can occur after superficial parotidectomy.
Does dentigerous cysts produce daughter cysts?
No it does not.
Where is an ameloblastic carcinoma most likely to spread when in the jaw?
Lungs, lymph nodes and spine.
Which odontogenic tumour can be mistaken for a carcinoma under a microscope?
Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour or Pindbourg tumour
What conditions is hyperplasticity and not always neoplastic?
Giant cell granuloma are hyperplastic
not always neoplastic.
What is the conical supernumerary?
Also known as mesiodens
tend to be found high and inverted in the palate in a horizontal position.
What is the most common benign soft tissue tumour?
Thyroglossal duct, dermoid and epidermoid cysts are the most common cysts in children.
Haemangioma - is most common benign one.
What is the odontogenic tumour with the highest incidence?
Odontoma.
