What are Pindaric odes?

A

based on choral odes from greek drama. They were written to give public praise, for example to Olymipc athletes

  • comprised of three parts (Strophe, Antistrophe and Epode)
  • Strophes and antistrophes would have the same metrical structure and the epode had a different metrical structure

A

these odes would have an irregular stanza structure where each stanza might be numbers of lines and include varying lines lengths to suit the mood/ atmosphere

A

horace used regular stanzas and regular metre in his odes.

the horatian ode was more personal (yet emotionally restrained) and meditative than the pindaric ode

what is a romantic ode?

A

-an ode that developed out of hortian and pindaric odes. It tended to combine the irregular stanza structure of the pindaric ode with the more personal meditative tone of the Horatian, however without the emotional restraint of Horace
