Oculomotor Dysfunction Flashcards
Oculomotor Function is a _____ skill
monocular
T or F: Most oculomotor dysfunction testing is done standing up
T
How to perform Eye control
test distance varies; Purpose: to help people to learn to use the eyes free of the rest of the body and to gain awareness of the feeling of eye movement
Method: using the wolf wand, pt stands upright ; tell pt to look at metal balls and follow them as if their eyes were attached to it ; ; move wand along with the metronome every four clicks ( up, down , R/L, in and out)
How to perform Wayne Saccadic Fixator
distance: pts arm length away ; purpose: therapy activity to promote accurate saccades and good eye hand coordination , perform with patch as monocular task
Method: Goal is to hit lights accurately with index finger , in the center, and quickly without any head movement , have pt alternate the fingers they use ; can make harder by placing bean bag on pts head or using R G Gls ; these are easier saccades
How to perform wall saccades
distance: 6 ft away Purpose: testing large gross saccades ( easier) ; Method: observe different blocks of letters ( ie 4 x 4 , or 3x 3 ) pt reads the first number in each block ( l to R and Top to bottom) - this is a timed task ; this is a monocular test but can be binocular later on ; Goal : read accurately without losing place or making errors, increase speed as ability improves
Modify: Metronome or Music
how to perform hart chart saccades
distance : 6-10 Ft away Purpose: test saccadic function ( smaller saccades ) Method: pt reads the first letter in column one then the first letter in column ten , followed by the second letter from the top in column one and then the second letter from the top in column ten and so on. Goal: complete in 75 secs
How to perform Hart Chart Saccades - column jumping
this is smaller saccades to pt has to be even more accurate ; Method: after mastering hart chart saccades , go to 3 column jumping ; do same procedure as in hart chart saccades , but have them read column 1,3,5 and then column 1, 5, 10 etc , then pick uneven spaced columns like 1,2, 10 .
How to perform Ann Arbor Michigan Tracking
this is monocular initially ; this tests small saccades pt sits on the test ; Purpose: exercises eye reading movements and trains visual discrimination ; method: pt matches and tracks the alphabet by examining a paragraph of nonsensical words and find each letter of the alphabet in order as quickly as possible ( each paragraph is timed)- Goal: no mistakes
How to perform Rotator O’s
this is a monocular test - smaller pursuits when tracking in the center, peripheral tracking tests larger pursuits; Method: pt wears patch and stands infront of rotator, pt picks a target on the board and looks through the ring at that target while the target is moving. They must keep 2 inches from the rotator at all times and follow the target for 3 turns , ( when using R hand, R foot must be out and same with the other hand) repeat with the other hand ; can make more difficult by changing the speed etc. Modify : bean bag on head , pinpoint flashlight to follow target
How to perform Rotator T’s
Purpose: Great for pursuits- helps develop hand eye coordination and the tactile space to vision space relationship ; Method: BINOCULAR unless you are doing it as higher level, pt chooses a hole to place the T follows it for three 3 turns and then puts the T in the hole , pt alternates hands and do this for 10-15 tees, after putting in about 12 or so , have pt remove the pegs and call out the peg color , then at next session have them place the tees then place ping pong balls on top of them
How to perform Talking Pen
Purpose: enhances accuracy of pursuits and saccades while giving auditory feedback , used for pursuits it looking at pen while moving ; Method: pen is used to trace and if it gets off track it makes a sound, For pursuits the pt follows a maze and doesn’t get off line , For saccades , the pt must jump from one column of circles to another column without getting outside the circles
How to perform Coin Circles
Purpose: good for pursuits and fine motor control ; Method: BINOCULAR , done while standing , pt holds coin at bottom with their thumb and forefinger and they move it slowly in a horizontal circle and follow with eyes only ( younger kids tend to make smaller circles), then they need to move it in a vertical circle ; at a later stage have them do figure 8’s
How to perform Computer Saccades
Purpose : test saccades using the computer
How to perform Tachictoscope
Purpose: Fixations; Method: computer orthoptics technique where 3 or more numbers are flashed quickly and the pt must recall those numbers in the correct order within a small time frame ; Goal: visual attention and accurate fixations Modify : changing the amt of numbers shown at once time or changing the size of the numbers shown
