A

Clinical Diagnosis of chlamydial conjunctivitis from Chlamydia Trachomatis serotypes A-K

Repeat scarring and contraction of eyelids from recurrent infections results in inturned eyelashes which cause trichiasis (pain on rubbing of eyelashes on sclera_ which can lead to blindness (3.6% of blindness in world is due to trachoma).

Australia is the only developed country in the world where Trachoma is still endemic.

Differential
- Viral conjunctivitis
- Bacterial conjunctivitis
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Hypersensitivity conjunctivitis (cosmetics, soaps, chemicals)

Can be spread through household contacts
- infected secretions, towels, washers, fly as a vector

A
  • Oral Azithromycin stat (20mg/kg max 1g)
  • Treat whole household if symptomatic.
  • Encourage daily hand and face washing
