Q

Pilocarpine

A
  • Cholinergic agents (parasympathomimetic)
  • Treatment of glaucoma via increased trabecular outflow
  • Dry eye therapy via lacrimostimulation
    • parasympathetic innervation to lacrimal glands (stimulatory)
  • Topical solution given orally - increase in parasympathetic activity

Q

Glycerin

A
  • Hyper-osmotic agent/diuretic
  • Oral
  • Metabolized to sugars - can cause hyperglycemia and glucosuria, avoid in diabetics

Q

Epinephrine and Dipvefrin

A
  • Adrenergic agents - sympathomimetics
  • Alpha and beta agonists - vasoconstriction, hemostasis; reduces IOP; mydriasis without cyclopegia (iris dilator muslce, NOT ciliary muscle)
  • Treatment of glaucoma via increased trabecular outflow (increased uveoscleral outflow)

Q

Latanoprost

A
  • Prostaglandin
  • Treat glaucoma via increased uveoscleral outflow
  • Causes intense miosis in the dog and cat and may increase conventional outflow of aqueous humor

Q

Cyclosproine A

A
  • Immunosuppressive agent
  • Dry eye therapy via lacrimostimulation
    • Inhibits T-cell activation - decrasing inflammation via decreasing IL-2 release and IL-2 receptor expression

Q

Tacrolimus

A
  • Immunosuppresive agent
  • Dry eye therapy via lacrimostimulation
  • Macrolide of fungal origin - targets T-helper lymphocytes and inhibits transcription of IL-2
  • T-cells dont proliferate and inhibit IFN-gamma secretion; no MHC class II antigens are induced and no further activation of macrophages occur
