ocular nerve innervation Flashcards
1
Q
cranial nerves that are related to the eye
A
optic nerve (II) oculomotor (III) trochlear (IV) trigeminal (V) abducent (VI) facial (VII)
2
Q
what does the oculomotor innervate?
A
- is a motor nerve superior division innervates - levator palpebrae superioris muscle - superior rectus muscle inferior division innervate - inferior rectus, inferior oblique, medial rectus - the efferent parasympathetic fibres supplies > ciliary muscles (accommodation) > sphincter pupillae muscle
(All extraocular muscles (EOM) except superior oblique and lateral rectus)
3
Q
what does the trochlear nerve innervate?
A
- is a motor nerve
- innervate superior oblique(SO) only
- thinnest nerve & longest among orbital nerve
4
Q
what does the abducent nerve innervate?
A
- is a motor nerve
- innervates lateral rectus muscle
- originated from midbrain through the carvenous sinus to the superior orbital fissure to the common tendinous ring
5
Q
what does facial nerve innervate?
A
- is a motor nerve
- innervates areas of face and scalp
- do not innervate ocular muscles
6
Q
what does optic nerve innervate?
A
- is a sensory nerve
- sends afferent visual information from retina to brain
7
Q
trigeminal nerve
A
- is a sensory nerve
- the largest of all cranial nerve w the motor and sensory roots, and a ganglion associated
- three division of the nerve are:
> ophthalmic
> maxillary
> mandibular
8
Q
autonomic nervous system
A
- Involve with innervation of involuntary structures
- The 2 components are:
> Sympathetic nervous system
> Parasympathetic nervous system - Innervates smooth muscles:
> Iris muscles
> Ciliary muscles
> Smooth muscles of the eyelids
> Choroidal and conjunctival blood vessels
> Lacrimal gland
9
Q
sympathetic nervous system
A
- In the eye, main functions of these nerves are:
> Vaso-constriction
> Pupil dilation (contraction of dilatator pupillae/dilator muscle)
> Lid retraction (contraction of the smooth muscle cells of the tarsal/ Muller muscle)
> Basal secretion of the lacrimal gland - fight/flight
10
Q
Parasympathetic Nervous System
A
- In the eye, the function of this system is to innervate:
> Ciliary muscle (accommodation)
> Iris sphincter muscle (miosis)
> Lacrimal gland - This system helps to restore & conserve energy
