OCR A-Level Biology Chapter 3 Flashcards
What Elements Make up Carbohydrates?
Carbon, oxygen and hydrogen
What can Carbohydrates also be called?
Saccharides or sugars. A singular sugar is called a monosaccharide while many sugars are called polysaccharides.
What is the Chemical Formula of
Glucose?
C6 H12 O6
What is the difference between Alpha Glucose and Beta Glucose?
The OH group bonded to carbon 1 is found below the H atom on an alpha glucose and vice versa.
How do two Alpha Glucose Molecules bond together?
Condensation happens so H2O leaves and the Carbons of the two molecules bond to the oxygen atom left creating a
1->4Alpha glycosidic bond.
What happens during prophase?
The chromatin begins to coil and condense into chromosomes. Two centrioles move to the poles of the cell and microtubule spindles form across the cell. The spindle fibres attatch to specific areas in the centromeres.
