Oceans Flashcards
The largest and deepest of Earth’s five oceanic divisions.
Fact: Covers 30% of the earths surface
Pacific Ocean
Second-largest of the world’s five oceans, with an area of about 106,460,000 km².
Fact: Covers 20% of the earths surface.
Atlantic Ocean
Third-largest of the world’s five oceanic divisions, covering 70,560,000 km² or ~19.8% of the water on Earth’s surface.
Fact: It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west and Australia to the east.
Indian Ocean
Smallest and shallowest of the world’s five major oceans.
Fact: Some oceanographers call it the Arctic Mediterranean Sea.
Arctic Ocean
Also known as the Antarctic Ocean, comprises the southernmost waters of the world ocean.
Fact:
Southern Ocean
A measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid.
Salinity
The uppermost level of the land or sea.
Surface zone
A steep temperature gradient in a body of water such as a lake, marked by a layer above and below which the water is at different temperatures.
Thermocline
Extending or situated relatively far down from a surface.
Deep zone
The continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean.
Water Cycle
The process of turning from liquid into vapor.
Evaporation
Water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.
Condensation
The action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution.
Precipitation
The gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the shoreline and the continental slope.
Continental shelf
The steeply inclined section of the continental margin located between the continental rise and the continental shelf.
