Oceans Flashcards
The three separating techniques
Filtration, distillation and evaporation.
What is a solution
A solution is formed when a solute completely dissolves in a solvent.
Equipment topic 1 oceans.
How much of Earth is water and how much of it is salt water?
71% and 96.5% of it is salt water.
Different types of current
surface currents and deep ocean currents. surface current is the top 10% and deep ocean current is the rest.
What are gyres?
Gyres are loops in the ocean’s current that go clockwise in Northern hemisphere and counter clockwise is Southern hemisphere.
What is coriolis effect?
When winds move from equator to equator, but the rotating Earth makes them curve around and makes gyres.
Why does water distribute heat?
Water distributes heat because it can carry more heat than air so the current distributes heat.
What is the pacific garbage patch?
An area in the Atlantic sea that contains tons of plastic.
How much co2 has the ocean absorbed?
about half of it which affects the pH (made it 30% more acidic)and makes the shells of coral creatures weaker as carbon dioxide makes hydrogen ions when it reacts with water that compete with the shell creatures to eat carbonate ions that makes shells. Also makes carbonic acids.
Monomers and Polymers?
Monomers are individual units and polymers are monomers chemically joined together. When this happens, it is called polymerisation.
How is plastic made?
By oil and more find in chemistry book.
Thermoplastic VS thermosetting.
Thermoplastic consists of long polymer chains with few cross links and can be reshaped when heated. Thermosetting has lots of cross links and cannot be reheated or reshaped.
What are synthetic plastics?
Synthetic plastics are plastics made with crude oil, coal or natural gas and man-made.
Main force moving surface and deep ocean current.
Surface: wind
Deep ocean: changes in density as when it approaches the North Pole, it gets colder and falls while the warm water goes to the top called Thermohaline circulation which makes the conveyor belt.
