Oceanography Flashcards
Bathymetry
Study of underwater depth of ocean floors
Bathemetric festures
Continental margin Ocean-basin floor Deep-sea trenches Mid-ocean trenches Abyssal plain
Continental margin
Shallow water area found in proximity to continents. 3 features continential rise, continental slope and the continental shelf.
Ocean-basin floor
Features include abyssal hills, seamounts and guyots
Deep-sea trench
Form in locations where one tectonic plate subducts under another forming a long narrow depression on the ocean floor
Mid-ocean ridge
Underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics lifting the ocean floor
Abyssal plain
Underwater plain on the deep ocean floor (usually depths 3000-6000m and between the foot of a continental rise and mid-ocean ridge
Guyot
Underwater tablemount, isolated underwater volcanic mountain with flat top
Continental rise
Sediment underwater feature found between the continental slop and abyssal plain.
Seamount
Large geologic landform that rises from the ocean floor but does not reach the surfact to form an island.
