Coastlines 2 Flashcards
3 types of plate boundaries
Divergent
Convergent
Transform
3 primary types of plate tectonic settings
Subduction zones
Rift zones
Extensional regimes
What is a collisional coast
Lies along the edge of an active convergent plate. Often associated with earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Explain the characteristics of collisional coasts
Straight coast Narrow continental shelves Steep continental slopes High mountains adjacent to the coast. Ocean trenches
What is a trailing edge coast?
Situated on stable side of continental margin away plate margins.
What are the 3 categories of trailing edge coasts
Wide Coastal plains
Large drainage basins
No ocean trenches
Lagoons
What is a marginal sea coast?
Develop along shores of seas enclosed by continents and islands. Wide shelves Shallow seas Irregular shorelines Deltas
Describe vegetation that exists on the coasts of warm, low-latitude climates
Warm, tropical - broad leaf trees, canopys and shrubs
Describe vegetation that exists on the coasts of cold, high-latitude climates.
Cold, tundra - bushes, grass, mosses, liechen
What are the 2 types of weathering?
Mechanical - rocks are broken apart from a physical process
Chemical - chemical reactions dissolve or alter minerals in rocks.
How does weathering impact the shape of a coastline?
Shoreline erosion can occur over time and reduce the size of the beach and cause exposed bedrock and erosions scarps and cliffs.
How do storms impact the shape of a coastline?
Depending on the storm significant deposition of sediment can occur or significant erosion and removal of sediment. Storm bars can be created.
