Oceanography Flashcards
What is the difference between point source and nonpoint source pollution?
Point source: can be traced to origin.
Non point source: cannot be traced to origin.
Give two examples of how salinity can increase and two examples of how salinity of ocean water can decrease.
Increase: evaporation, freezing.
Decrease: precipitation, ice melting.
What is echo sounding and how does it work?
Echo sounding tracks the time a sound wave takes to bounce off the bottom of the ocean and returned to the origin.
What are the parts of the water cycle?
Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and run off.
No the following ocean zones.
Intertidal, neuritic, open ocean, surface, transition, and deep.
What are the parts of a wave?
Crest, trough, wave length, and wave height.
How do waves change the shape of a beach?
Waves change the shape of a beach by causing erosion.
What causes surface currents?
Global wins.
What causes deep currents?
Changes in temperature and or pressure.
What causes tides?
The moon!
What is the difference between a springtide and a neap tide?
Springtime: greatest difference
Neapto type: lease difference
What is the difference between a lake and a pond?
Lake: larger, deeper, with less life.
Pond: more shallow, with more life, usually man-made.
