Astronomy Flashcards
What is a spectroscope?
An instrument that can disperse a beam of light into a spectrum of it separate wavelengths.
What is a continuous spectrum?
Unbroken broken band of color
What is a bright line spectrum?
shows the different chemical gas is being amended from a star. Each element has its own spectrum.
What are the different telescopes. (optical/radio)
Optical – can see visible light(refracting and reflecting)
Radio- can see radio waves
What is an HR diagram?
It is a graph used to determine a stars classification.
What is a circumpolar constellation?
Five constellations in the northern hemisphere that circle the pole star.
What are the five circumpolar constellations?
Ursa major Ursa minor Cepheus Cassiopeia Draco
What is the most important star in the sky?
Polaris
What are the planets and protoplanets in order from closest to farthest from the sun?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
Explain why we only see one side of the moon.
Earth and moon rotate at the same speed.
What is the difference between meteors, meteorite and meteoroids? Comets?
Meteors- when a meteorite enters the atmosphere and burns up.
Meteorite- what a meteor hits earth.
Meteoroid- is in space
What are the star systems and galaxies?
Binary stars- Star systems with two star.
Eclipse Binary- System where one star periodically blocks the light from another.
Spiral Galaxy- Milky Way
Irregular- irregular
Elliptical – round or flat and balls.
What is a spectrum?
The band of colors formed when light is split into it separate wavelengths
No the following moon terms and different types of each.
Crater – large round pits caused by the impact of meteorites.
Maria – dark, flat areas of hardened rock from lava flows.
Highlands – rugged lunar surface, lighter in color.
Phase – different shapes of the moon when you see it from earth.
Eclipse – when the moon completely blocks the sun, or the earth completely blocks the sun.
Tide – rise and fall of the ocean waves caused by the moon.
Understand dark matter and dark energy.
Dark matter – matter that does not give off electromagnetic radiation.
Dark energy – mysterious new force causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate.
