Ocean Vocab quiz Flashcards
Salinity
The quality or degree of being saline
Turbidity Current
A rapid, downhill flow of water caused by increased density due to high amount of sediment
currents
A body of water or air moving in a definite direction, especially through a surrounding body of water or air in which there is less movement
Gyre
A large system of rotating ocean currents
Estuaries
The tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream
Sea Breeze
A breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land
Land Breeze
A local wind system characterized by a flow from land to water late at night
Spring Tide
A tide after a new or full moon, when there is the greatest difference between high and low water
Neap Tide
A tide just after the first or third quarters of the moon when there is least difference between high and low water
Convection
the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity which consequently results in transfer of heat
Coriolis Effect
Circulating air is deflected toward the right in the northern hemisphere and toward the left in the southern hemisphere
Upwelling
A rising of seawater, magma, or other liquid
Thermocline
The transition layer between the warmer mixed water at the surface and the cooler deep water below.
Bathymetry
The measurement of depth of water in oceans, seas, or lakes
Sonar
A method or device for detecting and locating objects especially underwater by means of sound waves sent out to be reflected by objects
