Ocean Properties and Instruments Flashcards
1
Q
Sensible Heat
A
- Temperature change with NO phase change
2
Q
Specific Heat
A
- Temperature required to raise to 1º
3
Q
Latent Heat
A
- Heat required for Phase Change, but no temperature change
4
Q
Mixed Layer
A
- Layer of almost uniform density resulting from the mixing of stratifying and destratifying processes.
- Located from the surface of the ocean to the top of the pycnocline
5
Q
Thermocline
A
- Oceanic water layer where water temp. decreases rapidly as depth increases
6
Q
Isothermal
A
- Term for the condition where sea water’s temperature is uniform from the surface to the bottom
7
Q
Deep Layer
A
Deepest layer of the ocean. About 1000m down
8
Q
Salinity
A
Total amount of dissolved nonorganic and nonvolatile material in seawater
- Sp = Practical Salinity
- Source of ions: Eroded rocks
- Salinity goes up, density goes up
9
Q
Conductivity
A
Also determines the salinity of the water
- Usually how much salt or material is in the water
10
Q
CTD
A
Conductivity, Temperature, Depth
