Behavioural
Compulsions are repetitive, Compulsions reduce anxiety, Avoidance
Compulsions are repetitive
Compelled to repeat a behaviour e.g. compulsive handwashing.
Compulsions reduce anxiety
Performed in an attempt to manage the anxiety produced by obsessions e.g. checking door locked in response to though it might be unlocked.
Avoidance
Attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from situations that trigger it e.g. avoid contact with germs so don’t put bins out.
Emotional
Anxiety and distress, Accompanying depression, and Guilt and disgust.
Anxiety and distress
Experience unpleasant emotional experience due to the anxiety accompanies both obsessions and compulsions. The anxiety can be overwhelming.
Accompanying depression
Low mood and lack of enjoyment in activities, the compulsive behaviours tend to bring some relief but is temporary.
Guilt and disgust
Feel guilty as know behaviour is irrational but can’t stop. Their disgust may be directed at something external.
Cognitive
Obsessive thoughts, Cognitive copying strategies, Insight into excessive anxiety.
Obsessive thoughts
Varies from person to person but always unpleasant e.g. reoccurring thoughts.
Cognitive copying strategies
Helps manage anxiety and can make a person appear abnormal and distract from life e.g. praying if a religious person is tormented by obsessive guilt.
Insight into excessive anxiety
Aware their obsessions and compulsions are irrational which is necessary for diagnosis. They experience catastrophic thoughts about the worst-case scenario that might result if their anxieties were justified.
