Cognitive characteristics of OCD
-obsessive thoughts: sufferers plagued with obsessive thoughts (90% of condition)
-cognitive coping strategies: sufferers develop cognitive coping strategies which help them reduce fear but may appear abnormal
-insight into excessive anxiety: sufferers are aware that obsessions are irrational and may be hypervigilant.
Behavioural depression of OCD
-Compulsions: repetitive behavioural patterns- they attempt to reduce and manage anxiety cause by obsessions
-Avoidance: Individuals attempt to decrease anxiety by staying away from situations which may cause it.
Emotional characteristics of OCD
-Anxiety and distress: can lead to distressing thoughts which may overwhelm people.
-Accompanying Depression: OCD is often accompanied by depression- low mood and lack of enjoyable activities
-Guilt and Disgust:feelings of guilt/disgust are usually irrational beliefs that can be directed internally/externally
