behavourial characteristics of ocd

A

compulsions
- repetitive ie hand washing , tiffin g counting . feel compelled too repeat a behaviour
- reduce anxiety around 10% of sufferers show compulsive behaviour alone they have no obsessions just general irrational anxiety. vast majority of compulsions performed in an attempt to manage anxiety produced obsessions ie handwashing is a response too obsessive fear of germs
avoidance
attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from situations that trigger it . ie hand washing fear of germs may lead to people avoiding everyday tasks ie the bins

emotional characteristics of ocd

A

anxiety and distress
regarded as a particualory unpleasant emotional experience because of the anxiety . obsessive thoughts are unpleasant and frightening and the anxiety by these can be overwhelming
accompanying depression
ocd îs often accompanied by depression ,so anxiety can be accompanied by low mood and lack of enjoyment in leisure . compulsive behaviour tries to relieve anxiety
guilt and disgust
ocd can involve other negative emotions such as irrational guilt ie minor moral issues or disgust can be directed externally or internally

cognitive characteristics of ocd

A

obsessive thoughts
around 90% of sufferers the major cognitive issue of their condition is obsessive thoughts , vary considerably from person to person but always unpleasant ie contaminated by germs
cognitive strategies to deal with obsessions
major cognitive aspect of ocd but ppl also respond by adopting cognitive coping strategies ie religious person tormented by guilt may pray . help or manage anxiety but can make the person appear abnormal to others and not perform everyday tasks
insight into excessive anxiety
compulsions or obessions not always rational , sufferer experience catastrophic thoughts about the worst case scenarios that might result if their anxieties are justified tend to be hypervigillent ie maintain constant alertness
