What is OCD

A
  • an anxiety disorder characterised by persistent, recurrent, unpleasant thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive, ritualistic behaviours (compulsions)
  • sufferers experience obsessions, compulsions or a combination of both
  • OCD has an emotional aspect-the obsessions tend to cause people anxiety, and their compulsions are an attempt to relieve this

A
  • compulsions comprise intense, uncontrollable urges to repetitvely performs tasks and behaviours
  • the action only reduces the anxiety caused by an obsession for a short time
  • compulsions are the behavioural aspect
  • common compulsions are cleaning, washing, checking, counting and touching
