What is OCD
- an anxiety disorder characterised by persistent, recurrent, unpleasant thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive, ritualistic behaviours (compulsions)
- sufferers experience obsessions, compulsions or a combination of both
- OCD has an emotional aspect-the obsessions tend to cause people anxiety, and their compulsions are an attempt to relieve this

Compulsions in OCD
- compulsions comprise intense, uncontrollable urges to repetitvely performs tasks and behaviours
- the action only reduces the anxiety caused by an obsession for a short time
- compulsions are the behavioural aspect
- common compulsions are cleaning, washing, checking, counting and touching
Obsessions in OCD
-obsessions are intrusive and persistent thoughts, images and impulses. They are the internal aspect -common obsessions are fear of contamination and repetitive thoughts of violence
What obsessions are more common in men/women
Cleaning/washing rituals are more common in women; religious/sexual obsessions are more common in men
Obsessive symtoms of OCD-Behavioural
- hinder everyday functioning-having obsessive ideas of a forbidden or inappropriate type creates anxiety and an inability to perform everyday functions are severly hindered
- social impairment-anxiety levels generated so high to limit the ability to conduct meaningful interpersonal relationships
Obsessive symptoms of OCD-Emotional
-extreme anxiety-persistent inappropriate or forbidden ideas create excessively high levels of anxiety

- attentional bias-pereception tends to be focused on anxiety-generating stimuli
- recognised as self generated
- realisation of inappropriateness
- recurrent and persistent thoughts
Compulsive symptoms of OCD-Behavioural
- hinder everyday functioning-the performance of repetitive, compulsive behaviours can disrupt the ability to perform everyday activities
- social impairment-the performance of repetitive behaviours can affect the ability to conduct meaningful relationships
- repetitive-sufferers feel compelled to repeat behaviours as a response to their obsessive thoughts
Compulsive symptoms of OCD-Emotional
-distress-the recognition that compulsive behaviours cannot be consciously controlled can lead to a strong feeling of distress
Compulsive symptoms of OCD-Cognitive
- realisation of inappropriateness-sufferes understand that their compulsions are inappropriate but cannot consciously control them
- uncontrollable urges-sufferers perform acts they feel will reduce the anxiety caused by obsessive thoughts
How many people are affected by OCD
- 2% of the world’s population
- sufferers usually develop the disorder in their late teens/early 20s
- equal in men and women
