Occupational Health and Safety Regulations Flashcards
What group is at the highest risk for injury? What can be done to lower risk?
Young & new workers during first six months
Provide them with Health & Safety Orientation and training specific to their workplace
The OH&S presentation focused a lot of MSI. What is MSI and why did the presenter think it so important to dwell on it?
Musculosketal Injury — affecting muscles, bones, ligaments, joints
Most common workplace injury
Need to consider following in identifying and assessing risk of MSI
- Physical demands of work
- Aspects of layout and conditions of workplace
- Characteristics of objects handled
- Environmental conditions (cold temperature)
Briefly describe the 3-hazard incident that you researched on the WorkSafe BC website.
Fall Protection — fall protection system must be used when for drops of greater than 3m or when building height is less than 3m but the fall will injure someone
PPE - discusses the use of PPE during certain activities. These are here to mitigate injury in areas where hazards are present
Traffic Control — employer must ensure that effective traffic control is provided and
implemented whenever traffic could be hazardous to a worker. TCP, temporary traffic devices, training, supervision, risk assessment.
What are the workplace health and safety roles, rights and responsibilities of:
Owner
Responsible for maintaining the premises safely, disclosing potential hazards, and complying with health and safety regulations.
What are the workplace health and safety roles, rights and responsibilities of Employer
Must create a safe workplace, establish a health and safety program, train employees, provide first aid, and report injuries to WorkSafeBC.
What are the workplace health and safety roles, rights and responsibilities of Supervisor
Ensures workers’ health and safety, knows and complies with WorkSafeBC requirements, and ensures workers are aware of hazards and use personal protective equipment
What are the workplace health and safety roles, rights and responsibilities of Worker
Responsible for reporting hazards, following safe work procedures, using safety equipment properly, and cooperating with health and safety committees and representatives.
What are the workplace health and safety roles, rights and responsibilities of Prime Contractor
While prime contractors have overall responsibility for health and safety on a worksite, employers still retain responsibility for the health and safety of their own workers.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate the occupational health and safety activities of all employers, workers, and anyone else at the workplace.
Establish and maintain procedures to ensure occupational health and safety requirements at the workplace are followed by all parties.
How is the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Organized?
The Regulation is organized into three sets of requirements: the core requirements; general hazard requirements; and industry and activity related requirements.
What can you do with My Handbook?
Adding specific parts of OHS Regulation and related materials to My Handbook allows you to view, download, email, and print your selections. These selections are saved for the duration of your web session.
You are responsible for the safety of a construction crew working on an Island with ferry access once a day. With regards to first aid what do you need to ensure?
Adequate First Aid Facilities
Sufficiently Trained Personnel
Emergency Evacuation Plan
Communication Equipment
The majority of work related injuries and unfortunately, deaths, occur with young/new workers during the first 6 months of employment. Read through the OHS section with specific reference to Young or New Workers and summarize the main points raised
Young and new workers, defined as individuals under age 25 or those new to a workplace or facing new hazards, face higher risks in the workplace due to factors like inexperience, lack of training, and hesitancy to ask questions.
What is the procedure for refusal of unsafe work?
Report: A worker must stop and report the unsafe condition to their employer or supervisor.
Investigate: The employer or supervisor investigates and remedies the situation if unsafe. If disagreement occurs, the process moves to further investigation with a worker representative.
Notify WorkSafeBC: If unresolved, both parties must contact WorkSafeBC for intervention.
Assuming that some of you will be working in design offices and may be exposed to Musculosketal Injury (MSI) what are the relevant guidelines, resources available?
Typically, guidelines would include ergonomic assessments, regular breaks, proper workspace setup, and training on safe practices to reduce the risk of MSI.
Briefly Describe the three hazard incidents that you researched on the worksafe bc websit
1 - Worker Seriously injured when load shifted resulting in one worker being pinned.. Work performed by unqualified workers. Failure to monitor subcontractors
2 - New worker injured while washing windows near power line. Pole used for washing made contact with powerline. Inadequate training and supervision.
3 - Orchardist fatally injured when tractor and mower rolled over on a steeper bank. Should have assessed slope before mowing.
