Occular Phamarcology Flashcards
What are the sympapomimetics?
These cause mydriasis of the eye by activating the iris dilator muscles via A1 receptors. eg phenylephrine
They can cause arrythmias, hypertension, stinging and don’t work as well in those with diabetes as sugar interferes, or those with a dark iris.
What are the anti muscarinics?
They block the Parasympathetic nervous system so increase mydriasis.
Tropicamide - Short acting
Cyclopentolate - For cycloplegia (stops accommodation) and uveitis
What are the parasympathomimetics?
They act on the iris constrictor muscle and can reverse mydriasis if acute angle glaucoma occurs.
eg pilocarpine
They are also used for glaucoma
What are artificial tears?
Hypromellose to keep the eye wet
What is used for eye examination to stain the eye?
fluorescein
What is used as an eye anaesthetic?
Lidocaine
What would you use to visualise the eye?
tropicamide
anti muscarinic
What would you use for anterior uveitis or cycloplegia
cyclopentolate
What is a common beta blocker for glaucoma?
Timolol
What is lantanaprost?
Prostaglandin analogue - used in ocular hypertension and open angle glaucoma
Increases fluid drained from the eye
