Occlusion - principles of articulators Flashcards
What is a dental articulator?
mechanical device which represents the temporomandibular joint and jaw members, to which maxillary and mandibular casts attach
How can articulators be used in diagnosis?
they enable the dentist to observe various occlusal relationships.
they also enable diagnostic waxing and tooth repositioning to be carried out
what are articulators used for?
diagnosis
restoration
What is RCP and ICP?
RCP = retruded contact position
ICP = intercuspal position
What is the main reason for mounting study casts?
the initial tooth contact in RCP
the slide from RCP to ICP
lateral and protrusive occlusal contacts
What is the most useful registration for restorative dentistry?
intercuspal position = ICP
What are the requirements of the dental articulators?
vertical dimension
stability of the mounted position
intercuspal position
lateral excursion
aesthetic perspective
What are the disadvantages of hand held casts?
cannot reproduce the centric relation
cannot be closed together
accurate representation of aesthetics are not good
What do you use hand held cats for?
ICP
What are types of articulators and cast holders?
simple hinge articulators
fixed or mean value condylar path articulators
adjustable condylar path articulators
semi-adjustable condylar path articulators
fully-adjustable condylar path articulators
What are you looking for when doing facebow mounting?
signs of breakdown or occlusal instability
am i restoring more than 2 teeth in the arch or am i increasing the vertical dimension
if yes then take a facebow and mount the diagnostic cast on a semi-adjustable articulator
What is the purpose of a facebow?
to transfer both aesthetic and functional components from the patient to the articulator
very efficient
What is a facebow record?
records the orientation of the maxilla to the terminal hinge axis
What is the hinge axis?
hypothetical axis between the 2 condyles
What is the role of the articulator?
TRANSFERS THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE MAXILLARY ARCH AND TMJ TO CASTS
