Occlusion & Articulation Dr. Shatha Flashcards
What’s the difference between occlusion and statistics ?
Occlusion is the static relationship between
the incising or masticating surfaces of the
maxillary and mandibular teeth. • Articulation – The static and dynamic contact
relationship between the occlusal surfaces of
the teeth during function.
Why Maxillary and mandibular teeth should contact uniformly on closing?
1- to allow optimal function,
2-minimize trauma to the supporting structures
3-allow for uniform load distribution throughout the dentition.
What is adapted or habitual occlusion?
Most dentitions deviate from optimal alignment and occlusion. Many patients adapt well to less than optimal occlusion
What is centric relation and maximum intercuspation?
Centric relation Is defined as the maxillomandibular relationship in
which the condyles articulate with the thinnest
avascular portion of their respective disks with
the complex in the anterosuperior position
against the shapes of the articular eminences.
But
Maximum intercuspation
which is defined as the complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth, this is sometimes considered the best fit of the teeth regardless of condylar position, (Independent of condylar position).
When corrective occlusal
therapy is needed before restorative treatment?
When maximum intercuspation does not coincide
with centric relation
What is general the goal in restorative treatment?
1-occlusal contacts in posterior teeth that stabilize the mandibular position
2-the occlusion should be in harmony with the optimum condylar position
Sagittal plane?
Opening and protrusion
Horizontal plane?
Working side is in horizontal plane
Rotation and translation
None working side forward and medially
Frontal plane?
lateral and upward or lateral and downward
Mandibular movements are limited by what?
1-posteriorly, the right and left TMJs
2-anteriorly, the teeth of the maxillary and
mandibular arches
3-and overall, the neuromuscular system
The teeth provides guidance to the mandible in several ways, what are those?
The posterior teeth 1- provide the vertical stops 2- position of maximal intercuspation
The anterior teeth 1- guide the mandible in right and left lateral excursive movements 2- protrusive movements.
