occlusion and malocclusion Flashcards
what is meant by the ideal occlusion?
anatomically perfect arrangement of the teeth
what is meant by normal occlusion?
acceptable variation from ideal occlusion
what is meant by malocclusion?
an irregularity in the occlusion beyond the accepted range of normal
what are 3 causes of genetic malocclusion?
- skeletal pattern
- size of jaws/teeth
- syndromes (clp)
what are some enviromental causes of malocclusion?
- soft tissues
- habits
- pathology
- trauma
- local factors
what are some local factors that may contribute to having a malocclusion?
- hyper/hypo- dontia
- fraenum
- retained deciduous teeth
- early loss of deciduous teeth
what might a fraenum cause?
midline diastema
why does retained deciduous teeth cause malocclusion?
it prevents the pernament tooth from erupting into the correct space
what does IOTN stand for?
Index of Orthodontic Treament Needed
What is IOTN grade 1?
no tx required
what is IOTN grade 2?
little tx need
what is IOTN grade 3?
borderline tx need
what is IOTN grade 4&5?
treatment required
what other measurements/components are done when deciding IOTN?
1) measurement of severity of malocclusion
2) dental health component
3) aesthetic component
