what is the aetiology of CLP?
- isolated

what enviromental factors can cause CLP?
- maternal alcohol
- smoking
- anticonvulsant drugs
- folic acid deficiency
- steroid therapy
how is the palate formed?
from the palatal processes of the maxillary process around 6-11th week i.u
what problems can CLP cause?
- feeding
- hearing
- speech
- emotional
- dental anomalies
why might CLP cause problems with feeding?
cannot create adewuate negative intra-oral pressure
why might CLP cause problems with hearing?
problems with middle ear ventilation of Eustachian tube
why might there be speech problems with CLP?
soft palate unable to make contact with pharynx
what emotional problems may be caused with CLP?
low self esteem, poor body image, behavioural problems, increased risk of self-harm and suicide
