What is obstructive sleep apnoea.
A disorder characterized by intermittent closure/collapse of the pharyngeal airway causing apnoeic episodes during sleep.
How are obstructive apnoeic episodes terminated.
By partial arousal.
What arre the typical features of patient with obstructive sleep apnoea. (3)
Obese.
Middle aged.
Male.
Why does a patient with obstructive sleep apnoea usually present. (3)
Daytime somnolence.
Snoring.
Complaints from partner!
What are the symptoms of a patient with obstructive sleep apnoea. (6)
Loud snoring. Daytime somnolence. Poor sleep quality. Morning headache.. Decreased libido. Decreased cognitive performance.
What are the complications of obstructive sleep apnoea. (3)
Pulmonary hypertension.
Type 2 respiratory failure.
Sleep apnoea is also reportedly an independent risk factor for hypertension.
