Obstructive lung diseases Flashcards
COPD is associated with
Abnormal inflammation
What is COPD?
Characterized by progressive airflow limitation
Group of disorders
Chronic Bronchitis
Emphysema
Clinical Manifestations of chronic bronchitis and emphysema?
Cough
Dyspnea
Prolonged expiration
Barrel chest
What is chronic bronchitis?
Hyper secretion of mucus & chronic productive cough.
Causes of Chronic bronchitis
Tobacco smoke
Occupational dust
Air pollution
Pathophysiology of CB
- Inhaled irritant causes airway inflammation.
- Bronchial edema & mucus glands affected.
- Production of lrg amts of mucus.
- Defense mechanism of lungs compromised as well.
What is emphysema?
Abnormal enlargement & destruction of airways and alveoli.
Obstruction results from changes in lung tissue, instead of inflammation and mucus production.
Causes of emphysema
Inherited deficiency of alpha 1-anti-trypsin enzyme.
Cigarette smoke/air pollutants.
What is the pathophysiology of emphysema?
- Destruction of the alveolar wall & the loss of elastic recoil.
- Difficulty expiring air, leading toast trapping.
- Increased WOB, hypoventilation
