What should you check for during a breast exam?
- cracking
- hard masses
- cracking or fissures on nipples and areola
- ask how baby is nursing
What should you check for a Uterus exam?
- put on gloves
- lower the head of the bed
- ask if she’s emptied her bladder
- ensure privacy
- lift up gown
- check fondus
start at level of umbilicus - if uterus is at umbilical level (UU)
- if uterus is above umbilicus by 1 cm (1/U)
- if uterus is below umbilicus by 1 cm (U/1)
- press down feeling for firm pear-shaped fondus
What should you look for when checking Lochia/labia?
check for
- vaginal discharge
- labial swelling (provide icepacks)
What should you check when loooking at the Episiotomy?
- get patient in side-lying position
- check sutures
- check for hemmorhoids
When checking the Homan’s sign, what should you look for?
- when you flex your feet toward your head do you have any pain
- check for varicosities
- palpate pedal pulses
What should you look for regarding Emotional status?
- are you unusually sad
* educate about signs and symptoms of post partum depression
