What is an obsession?
A persistent thought, idea, impulse or image that experienced repeatedly, feels intrusive and causes anxiety
What is a compulsion?
A repetitive and rigid behaviour or mental act that a person feels driven to perform in order to prevent or reduce anxiety
How does DSM-5 characterise OCD?
- Recurrent obsessions and compulsions
- Recognition of obsession and compulsion
- Person is distressed or impaired
What are the behavioural characteristics of OCD?
- Compulsions
- Avoidance
What are the emotional characteristics of OCD?
- Anxiety and distress
- Guilt and disgust
What are the cognitive characteristics of OCD?
- Obsessive thoughts
- Insight into excessive anxiety (know thoughts are irrational)
