Observations Flashcards
4 main types of observations:
Participants
Non-Participant
Covert
Overt
Participant observation:
Partaking, involvement
Non-Participant observation:
they are sat in a room not participating
Covert observation:
do not know they are being watched
Overt observation:
know they are being watched
What are the main issues when conducting a participant observation
Getting in - risked life to get in
Staying in - gain trust and build a relationship
Getting out - may be unable to get out
PET issues of overt observations
productivity makes more money, they may show desired characteristics, Hawthorne effect
PET issues of covert observations:
deception, consent
Advantages of participant observations : PET
p = access to pps, only way to access data
e = consent
t = high in validity
Disadvantages of participant observations
Access to pps, time costs, getting out
deception, risk of harm, low breach
harder to repeat so low reliability, change characteristics
