Observations Flashcards
Naturalistic Observation
Recording the behaviours of your research in real-world settings
Controlled Observation
Researchers watch participants in a contained environment e.g lab
Participant Observation
Researcher takes the role of a participant whilst observing other participants behaviour around them
Non-participant Observation
Researcher watches and records participants behaviour without interfering in anyway, and the participants are unaware that they are being observed
Overt Observation
Participants are aware they are being observed and the observer will be visible to the participants
Covert Observation
When participants are unaware they are being observed. The observer may watch through a one-way mirror or be hidden in some other way
Structured Observation
The researcher uses a system to organise their observation. Includes behaviour categories and sampligg by procedures
Unstructured Observation
Researcher records all relevant behaviour but has no system
Coding System
Measures the occurrence of behaviours
Event Sampling
Participants are observed by the psychologist, who records a specific behaviour each time it occurs to then create a total score
Time Sampling
The psychologist observes and records behaviour at specific time intervals
