Experiments Flashcards
independent variable
variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure
dependant variable
variable that changes as a result of the independent variable manipulation
extraneous variable
any variable that you’re not investigating that can potentially affect the outcomes of your research study
confounding variables
affects other variables in a way that produces fake or distorted associations between two variables
operationalisation
turning abstract concepts into measurable observations
standardisation
process in which procedures used in research are kept the same
random allocation
technique that chooses individuals for treatment groups and control groups entirely by chance with no regard to the will of researchers or patients’ condition and preference
experimental condition
the group of participants who are exposed to the independent variable
control condition
a condition that does not involve exposure to the treatment or intervention under study
lab experiment
research method in which the experimenter manipulates one or more independent variables and measures the effects on the dependent variable under controlled conditions
field experiment
research method that uses some controlled elements of traditional lab experiments, but takes place in natural, real-world settings
quasi experiment
an experiment where participants cannot be randomly assigned to the independent variable
online research
ways in which researchers can collect data via the internet
