Define Parity
No. times given birth to alive/stillborn foetus with gestational age 24 weeks or more.
Nulliparous & Multiparous mean what?
Nulliparous= No previous births regardless of outcome Multiparous= Given birth more than once
Define Gravidity
Number of times a woman has been pregnant
Primagravida & Multigravida mean what?
Primagravida= first pregnancy Multigravida= been pregnant more than once
What is the difference between SGA and IUGR?
SGA only considers birth wt.- whether pre/post-natal <10th percentile
IUGR- clinical definition- neonate with clinical features of malnutrition and in-utero growth restriction (not birth wt.)
What maternal factors might increase the risk of IUGR?
BMI<20 Age <16 / >35 Prev SGA Parity 0 / >5 Inter-pregnancy interval <6mo / >2 yrs
Substance abuse
Infection e.g Malaria, TB, TORCH
What are the two types of IUGR?
Symmetrical (earlier in preg.)
Asymmetrical (later in preg)
Antenatal scan shows reduced: head circumference, abdo circumference, biparietal diameter and fetal length.

What are the signs of Asymmetrical IUGR on antenatal / post-natal examination?
Asymmetrical IUGR
Antenatal: Reduced abdo circumference. Normal head/ parietall
Postnatal: Reduced weight. Normal length/head circumference.
