A woman is waiting at your office door when you open. She says she has been seeing flashing lights peripherally and a tiny area of vision which looks like a “spider web”.
Yellow light: referral for urgent same day care
A man shows up at your office with his elderly father and reports that his father’s right eye is extremely painful. Upon questioning the son further, he states that the patient has been vomiting, seeing halos around lights. The son also reports that the patient has complained of extreme pain.
Red light: referral for immediate care
A mother brings in her four-year-old daughter who woke up with her eyes matted together. The child’s eyes are slightly injected and she is tearing copiously. She says that her eyes feel like sand is in them.
Yellow light: referral for urgent same day care
A man walks into the office leading another man who has his eyes covered with a wet cloth. He has gotten chemicals in both eyes from an accident at work and his eyes are still painful even though they were flushed with water for the appropriate time.
Red light: referral for immediate care
A patient comes to you because she has had a “bump” on her left upper lid for about a month. It is not painful, but she is concerned with the physical appearance.
Green light: referral for priority care - within a week
A patient who has never been seen in you office walks in and reports that he just experienced loss of vision in the right eye for a minute or two. He has no pain.
Red light: referral for immediate care
A teenage boy who wears soft contact lenses wants to come in today because he is seeing halos and says they “bug” him. Upon examination he has punctate keratitis, a small infiltrate and his contact lenses are extremely dirty
Yellow light: referral for urgent same day care
A woman brings her elderly grandmother into your office, because she complained of scalp tenderness when she took her to have her hair done. Upon further questioning she reveals that her grandmother has been unusually lethargic, had little appetite and told her today that she has a “bad headache”.
Red light: referral for immediate care
